Red Flags, Romance & the OK Corral — Our Review of An Inconvenient Acquaintance
We’re back in our brand-new recording studio, and we kicked things off in style.
Episode 193 of the LiteraryScape Podcast features our review of An Inconvenient Acquaintance by Sara R. Turnquist. It’s book five in her Convenient Risk Series — and it did not disappoint.
Pull up a chair. Let’s talk Tombstone, two very different suitors, and one heroine who almost wandered into a historical shootout.
What Is An Inconvenient Acquaintance About?
Ada Clara Miller arrives in Tombstone, Arizona, as the new schoolteacher. She’s independent. She’s spirited. And she’s not prepared for the attention of two very different men.
Slim Daly is a ranch hand — grounded, genuine, and surprisingly good in an apron. Stanford is charming, polished, and full of red flags.
Caught between safety and excitement, Ada Clara must figure out who she really wants. All while Tombstone brews toward one of the most famous moments in American history.
Red Flag vs. Green Flag: Our Fun New Game
Because this book is basically a master class in spotting the wrong guy, we pulled out our red and green flags.
Stanford racked up four red flags. He called Ada Clara by her first name without permission. He pressured her to eat food she clearly didn’t want. And when a frightened child needed help, he made things worse.
Slim? Two green flags. He helped bake biscuits without being asked. He thanked Ada Clara just for caring — and meant it.
The score was obvious. The reader could see it. Ada Clara… took a little longer.
A Gripping Opening Scene at the Train Station
The book opens with a robbery. Ada Clara holds on tight to her bag. She ends up on the ground anyway. And then Slim arrives with her bag — and helps her up.
It’s a classic meet-cute. Except gritty. And set in the Wild West. We loved it.
The OK Corral Shootout — Historical Fiction Done Right
One of us didn’t read the back cover. So the OK Corral scene came out of nowhere.
Sara R. Turnquist weaves the legendary gunfight seamlessly into the story. Wyatt Earp and his brothers walk the streets. And Ada Clara — lost in her own thoughts — nearly wanders right into the middle of it.
Good thing Slim was nearby to pull her to safety.
The historical detail felt real. The tension felt earned. It was a highlight of the book.
A Pretty Woman Moment at the Opera
Ada Clara takes Slim to the opera. He’s never been. The crowd stares. Some people snicker.
But Slim is captivated. He loves stories. Seeing one performed live — it lights him up.
We thought it was sweet. A little Pretty Woman. A lot charming.
Our LiteraryScape Coffee Ratings
We rate books on our signature coffee scale — from espresso (light) to latte (rich and full).
- Mystery Level: Espresso — This isn’t a mystery novel.
- Suspense Level: Espresso to Mocha — A few tense moments, but nothing too intense.
- Inspiration Level: Mocha — It’s there, but it’s gentle.
- Drama Level: Mocha to Latte — Ada Clara creates plenty of it herself.
- Romance Level: Espresso to Mocha — The tension is real, but the heat stays light.
Overall rating: 3 Lassos. A solid, enjoyable historical romance.
