Meet Sadie Rose Perkins: A Heroine Carrying the Weight of the World

Sadie Rose Perkins is not your average historical romance heroine. Her father — the town banker — fled with everyone’s savings. That act of betrayal left Sadie to face the consequences alone.

The entire town shuns her. People blame her for sins she had no part in. On top of that, her mother is declining mentally, showing signs that sound very much like dementia or Alzheimer’s. And there is no name for it yet in this era, which makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Sadie hides her mother’s condition as long as she can. She fights to keep her home. She endures legal threats, social isolation, and family cruelty — all while trying to hold herself together.

David Anderson: The City Lawyer Who Steals Your Heart (Eventually)

Enter David Anderson. He is a lawyer from Richmond, dreaming of a partnership in his father’s firm. He did not plan to get tangled up in Sadie’s messy situation.

At first, he feels a little too refined for the ranch life he finds himself in. He hates the dust, the noise, and especially the horses. One scene involving a very old, very patient horse had us laughing out loud. Watching him get in and out of the saddle is apparently quite a sight.

But here is where the author works her magic. Despite his polished exterior, David steps in at the post office when the townspeople are cold toward Sadie. He cannot ignore her plight. That small act of gentlemanly decency is the moment readers start to root for him.

He grows. He softens. He starts to care — beyond what his logical, city-lawyer mind planned for.

Small-Town Villains: The Deputy Who Crosses Every Line

Deputy Travers earns a special level of reader frustration in this story. He corners Sadie and essentially tries to force her into a marriage that would serve only him. The audacity of someone in law enforcement using his position to exploit a vulnerable woman is infuriating — and intentionally so.

Turnquist does not shy away from the realities women faced in this era. She places Sadie in impossible situations and then shows her finding a way through them, usually with David at her side.

Family Drama and Cousin Alice: The Dinner Table Villain

Sadie’s aunt arrives to help, which sounds like good news. Her cousin Alice arrives too, which is decidedly not good news. Alice uses a family dinner to embarrass Sadie with childhood stories in front of everyone — cruel, petty, and deeply personal.

The fact that Alice’s mother is warm and kind makes the dynamic even more frustrating. Listeners agreed they were waiting for the mother to step in and set Alice straight. Sara R. Turnquist knows how to write secondary characters who feel fully real, even the ones you wish were fictional.

The Doctor, the House Fire, and the Moment Everything Changes

One of the most satisfying moments in the book involves the town doctor. He keeps Sadie’s secret about her mother for a long time. Readers wonder which way he will go — and when he finally speaks up in court on Sadie’s behalf, it feels earned.

He even helps connect Sadie to a compassionate care facility for her mother. It is a rare moment of grace in a story full of hardship.

The house fire is the turning point where Sadie can no longer hide anything. It strips away every last layer of protection she had built. From there, the story moves toward resolution — and the warm, faith-filled ending that fans of this genre love.

The Golden Years: A Hidden Gem in the Convenient Risk World

We also talked about a companion volume that fits between Books 5 and 7. The Golden Years is a collection of short stories following Dorothy and Owen — the older couple who appear throughout the main series. Each chapter covers a different month of their life together.

If you have been reading the series, this is a sweet addition worth seeking out.

Our Rating: Coffee Scale Breakdown

LiteraryScape uses a coffee-themed rating scale — here is how A Less Convenient Arrangement stacked up:

  • Mystery Level: Espresso — There is no real mystery here. The situation is clear from the start.
  • Suspense Level: Espresso to Espresso Mocha — There are tense moments, but it leans more emotional than plot-driven suspense.
  • Inspiration Level: Mocha — Faith and perseverance run through every chapter.
  • Drama Level: Latte — Between the scandal, the mental health crisis, the family tension, the deputy, and the town’s judgment, Sadie never catches a break.
  • Romance Level: Espresso — Sweet, clean, and slow-building. Exactly what readers of Christian historical romance come for.

Overall Lasso Rating: 3 out of 5. Well-written, emotionally resonant, and a satisfying conclusion to the series.
