A Constant Love: Finding Hope Through Grief in Tracie Peterson’s Hope of Cheyenne Series
Grief can bring a person to their knees. It can strip away purpose, silence laughter, and make ordinary life feel impossible. In A Constant Love, bestselling Christian fiction author Tracie Peterson tackles that painful reality head-on. It is the first book in her Hope of Cheyenne series, and it is one of the most emotionally resonant novels we have reviewed on LiteraryScape.
What Is A Constant Love About?
The story opens in the aftermath of a brutal Wyoming winter. Micah Hamilton is drowning in grief and guilt following a devastating family tragedy. He has abandoned his father’s dream of a prosperous ranch and shut himself off from everyone who loves him.
Charlotte Aldridge has loved Micah since childhood. She refuses to give up on him. With quiet determination and her mother’s steady support, Charlotte begins drawing Micah back into the land of the living. Their bond deepens through shared sorrow and slowly rekindled hope.
But just when Charlotte’s long-held dreams seem within reach, a spurned suitor threatens to tear everything apart. Micah and Charlotte must face their pain together and choose whether to build a life rooted in faith, hope, and enduring love.
A Brave Choice: Addressing Suicide in Christian Fiction
Tracie Peterson does something rare in this novel. She addresses suicide directly, honestly, and with deep compassion. It is not a background detail. It shapes the entire emotional landscape of the story.
Peterson has spoken openly about why she wrote this storyline. A family member’s death by suicide left her grappling with the same questions Micah wrestles with throughout the book. She wanted to offer hope to readers who have experienced that specific, complicated grief.
On the podcast, our host shared a personal moment of vulnerability. She had to stop reading early in the book because she had recently lost a dear friend and colleague to suicide. The story reopened that wound. But after finishing the novel, she said she walked away feeling renewed. That is the power of what Peterson has created here.
If this is a sensitive topic for you, please know the book handles it with biblical wisdom, profound tenderness, and ultimately, genuine hope.
The Characters: Micah, Charlotte, and the Villainous Louis
Micah is a character you will root for even at his lowest. When Charlotte arrives to help him — washing his hair, giving him a haircut, and bluntly telling him he smells terrible — it is simultaneously heartbreaking and quietly funny. That combination is Peterson’s gift. She finds the human moments inside the darkest chapters.
Charlotte is spirited and strong-willed. She has known her own mind since childhood. Her father arranged a match with Louis, a local lawyer, but Charlotte refuses to accept it. She has loved Micah her entire life, and no arrangement is going to change that.
Louis provides the story’s tension and some unintentional comic relief. Every time he struggles getting in and out of his buggy while the ranch hands look on, the contrast between his pretension and the rugged Wyoming world around him is delightful. He is ridiculous in exactly the right way.
The book also features a sweet supporting storyline involving a character named Rich Johnson, whose gentle pursuit of his own happiness adds warmth and a surprise to the ending.
Faith Woven Into Every Page
One of the most praised elements on the podcast was how naturally Peterson weaves faith into her storytelling. It never feels preachy. It never feels forced. It simply breathes through the narrative the way it does in real life.
A passage from Romans anchors Micah’s healing journey. The verse — that neither life nor death, angels nor demons, nothing in all creation can separate us from Christ — becomes the theological foundation for how Micah processes his father’s death. It is powerful, carefully chosen, and deeply moving.
Charlotte also has her own spiritual struggle. Her mother pours wisdom into her throughout the story. The result is a book absolutely full of underlined passages. One of our hosts held the book up to the camera during the episode. The tabs marking favorite quotes filled the entire edge. That says everything.
As one host summarized: “We give up on God and walk away, or we trust Him no matter what happens.” That is the heartbeat of this novel.
How Does A Constant Love Rate on the LiteraryScape Scale?
Our hosts use a coffee-themed rating system. Here is how A Constant Love scored:
Mystery Level: Low — this is not a mystery novel
Suspense Level: Low — the tension is emotional, not plot-driven
Inspiration Level: Latte (high) — absolutely packed with hope and faith
Drama Level: Latte (high) — emotionally rich throughout
Romance Level: Moderate — sweet and present, but not high heat
Overall Lasso Rating: 4–5 out of 5 — highly recommended
One host gave it four to five stars without hesitation. The other confirmed it as a strong three-plus, noting the emotional weight makes it a standout in the genre.
The Hope of Cheyenne Series: Where to Start
A Constant Love is Book 1 in the Hope of Cheyenne series. Book 2, Designed With Love, will be the focus of next week’s episode.
There is also a companion series called Heart of Cheyenne, which follows the parents of these characters and tells the story of the town’s earliest days. If you want even richer context for the Hamilton and Aldridge families, that earlier series is worth exploring.
