About This Episode

Designed with Love by Tracie Peterson: A Story of Faith, Loss & Unexpected Romance in the Wild West

If you love historical Christian romance with heart, depth, and a little drama, book two of Tracie Peterson’s Hope of Cheyenne series delivers all of that and more. In this episode of the LiteraryScape podcast, we dive deep into Designed with Love — a story about grief, second chances, and the faith that quietly weaves two unlikely hearts together.

What Is Designed with Love About? A Cheyenne Romance That Starts with Heartbreak

This book wastes no time. It opens with a bang — and we mean that almost literally. Emma Johnson is widowed on her very wedding day, and that shocking event sets the entire story into motion.

Emma is whisked away to Cheyenne, Wyoming, by her new sister-in-law to begin a fresh chapter. Her brother-in-law, Colton Benton, travels along to help. The catch? Colton has quietly loved Emma since the moment they met — long before she married his brother Tommy.

Now, with Tommy gone, Colton finds himself in an impossible position. His feelings are real. But the timing couldn’t be more complicated. Emma is grieving. She’s wary. And she has every reason to wonder whether Colton’s attention is genuine or driven by the inheritance she now controls.

Emma and Colton: Two Characters with Powerful Transformation Arcs

One of the standout strengths of this novel is the depth of character growth Peterson gives both leads.

Emma begins the story as someone who had drifted away from her faith. She wanted fun. She wanted freedom. Her marriage to Tommy wasn’t rooted in love — it was rooted in wanting to do the things society only permitted for married couples. His sudden death forces her to stop and truly reckon with her life.

Colton, on the other hand, was shaped by a cold, money-driven father. His whole upbringing centered on financial success and appearances. Learning to open his heart — to love without agenda — is his journey throughout the book.

Together, their arcs are compelling. They don’t just fall in love. They both become better people in the process.

Rosie Benton: The Breakout Character Readers Will Adore

Ask anyone who reads this book, and they’ll tell you the same thing: Rosie steals the show.

Rosie is Colton’s younger sister. She was born with complications that left her with what we might today recognize as a learning disability. Her family largely hid her away, embarrassed by her lack of filter and her childlike honesty.

But Rosie is one of the most lovable, fiercely loyal characters in the series. She sees through people instantly. She loves without condition. And she protects Emma from the scheming of her other brothers with a boldness nobody expects.

Rosie even gets her own quiet love story — and it is absolutely the sweetest thing in the book. Her romance with the sheriff’s son is handled with such tenderness that readers can’t help but root for her from the very first chapter.

Family Greed, Hidden Motives & the Pressure to Marry for Money

Colton’s other brothers are not the heroes of this tale. Quite the opposite. They’re willing to pressure Colton into marrying Emma purely for access to Tommy’s fortune — an inheritance she controls.

That tension runs through the entire novel. Can Emma trust that Colton loves her for who she is? Or is she just a financial transaction to the Benton family?

The brothers’ desperation adds a layer of suspense that keeps readers turning pages. And when Rosie steps in to warn Emma about her brothers’ motives, it’s one of the most satisfying moments in the book.

Faith as a Quiet, Steady Thread Through the Story

Peterson doesn’t beat readers over the head with faith themes. Instead, she weaves them in organically. Emma’s spiritual journey feels earned. So does Colton’s.

Their mother was a woman of deep faith, quietly passing her beliefs on to her children even while their father worshipped money. That contrast between the two parental figures gives the faith elements of the story real texture and tension.

By the end, both Emma and Colton have been genuinely changed — not just by love, but by something larger than themselves.

How Does Designed with Love End? (Spoiler-Light)

In true Tracie Peterson fashion, the novel closes with a double wedding. Yes, another one — and it works beautifully.

Emma makes a stunning act of generosity toward Rosie that speaks volumes about how far she has come. The business subplot involving the Union Pacific railroad wraps up in a way that’s surprisingly satisfying. And the stage is set perfectly for the final book in the series.
