Karen Witemeyer Interview

Tiffanie and I were thrilled to have the opportunity to interview award winning author Karen Witemeyer. She is the author of the Hanger’s Horsemen series that we have been reading and discussing this past month. Karen is also the recipient of the 2022 Christy Award, the 2022 ACFW Carol Award, and 2022 Holt Medallion Finalist with her Christmas novella titled, A Texas Christmas Carol.

Did you know that Karen took three of her favorite TV shows and used them as inspiration for the Hanger’s Horsemen series? If you have read the series, I am sure you can figure out what at least two of the three TV shows were, as they make a pretty strong appearance in the first book, At Love’s Command. (Want to know what those 3 TV shows were? Listen to our podcast episode posted above.)

Karen’s favorite characters to write in this series were not main characters, but side characters that really brought, The Heart’s Charge, to life. I have a feeling that her readers would cling to these two rascals as their favorites as well.

Did anyone want to slap Charlie across the face and tell him to wake and smell the coffee?! You are not alone in this sentiment. Karen found Charlie’s character the most frustrating to write throughout this series. It’s a good thing he comes to senses at the closing of the first book!

Who were your favorite leading male and female characters in the Hanger’s Horsemen series? I loved Luke and Kate. Luke’s story and personality were hard to not fall for. His faith, perseverance, loyalty, and protectiveness make you want to curl up in his arms, right ladies? Kate was a favorite of mine because she is quiet, works in the background, and has a heart for the orphaned children. Her and I are very alike making it easy for me to relate to her. Whereas Tiffanie connected more with Josephine as they both have a medical background. Are you wondering who was Karen’s favorite? Check out or podcast posted above!

Which book was your favorite in the Hanger’s Horsemen series? What was your favorite scene? Find out Karen’s answers to these questions and more during Episode 45! Don’t forget to post your answers to these questions in the comments below!
