Target Acquired takes readers straight into the danger zone. Lynette Eason continues her Lake City Heroes series with book two, and our LiteraryScape Book Club couldn’t wait to discuss it. This story follows tactical medic Kinsey King as she fights for respect on an all-male SWAT team. Meanwhile, team leader Cole Garrison finds his heart pulled toward her. Trouble, unfortunately, is close behind them both.

A SWAT Team Under Fire in Lake City Heroes Book Two

Kinsey has trained for years to earn her spot on the team. Still, some teammates believe she only got the job through connections. Because of that doubt, she works twice as hard to prove her worth. Cole, on the other hand, sees her qualifications clearly and treats her fairly. Soon, someone begins targeting SWAT members one by one. As the danger escalates, Kinsey and Cole must set their growing feelings aside. Together, they race to uncover the killer before he strikes again.

Meet Kinsey King and Cole Garrison

Our hosts loved digging into these two leads during the discussion. Kinsey stood out as tough, humble, and fiercely dedicated to her team. Cole impressed listeners with his fairness and quiet strength of faith. Both characters, however, share a vulnerability that makes them easy to root for. Additionally, the surrounding friend group and fellow SWAT members add warmth, humor, and heartbreak throughout the story.

A Dual Timeline That Adds Depth

Chapters occasionally shift back to the 1940s and ’50s, following Cole’s grandmother, Eliza. Her storyline reveals how women were often treated during that era. At one point, she’s placed in a mental institution against her will. Sadly, this reflects real history, since a woman’s closest male relative once held that power over her. Despite the heartbreak, Eliza’s chapters bring unexpected tenderness and connection to the present-day plot. Readers found themselves just as invested in her journey as in Kinsey and Cole’s.

Faith and Provision Woven Through the Story

Eason weaves faith naturally into everyday moments throughout Target Acquired. One storyline shows God’s provision for a struggling family through the SWAT team itself. That thread echoes Philippians 4:19 and Matthew 6:26 beautifully. Elsewhere, the team’s habit of praying for each other reflects 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Philippians 4:6-7 also came to mind as characters brought their fears to God instead of carrying them alone. These faith elements never feel forced; instead, they flow naturally from the characters’ lives.

Every episode, our hosts rate the book using our signature coffee-inspired scale. Target Acquired earned a Latte for mystery and another Latte for suspense. Inspiration landed at Mocha, thanks to how naturally faith appears throughout. Drama also scored a Latte, with plenty of tension both past and present. Romance, however, stayed light at Espresso, making this a great pick for suspense-first readers. Overall, the book earned a full three lassos out of three.

Should You Read Target Acquired?

If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense with strong faith threads, this one delivers. Fans of tactical action, family history, and slow-building romance will find plenty to love. Light-romance readers, especially, will appreciate how Eason handles the relationship with restraint. Overall, our hosts highly recommend this second installment in the Lake City Heroes series.
