How Christian Fiction Readers Can Help Rescue Children from Human Trafficking: Destiny Rescue on the LiteraryScape Podcast
What if your next Christian romance novel could help rescue a child? That question sits at the heart of a very special LiteraryScape Podcast episode. Instead of reviewing a book, host Melissa LaShure welcomes Andi from Destiny Rescue. Together, they talk about hope, faith, and freedom for children caught in human trafficking.
The conversation is gentle yet powerful. Above all, it points listeners toward a God who sees every child.
Meet Destiny Rescue: A Christian Nonprofit Fighting Child Trafficking
Destiny Rescue is an international Christian nonprofit. According to Andi, the organization exists to rescue children from exploitation and human trafficking. Just as important, the team equips those children to stay free.
Its U.S. headquarters sits right here in Indiana. Meanwhile, staff members serve across the country, and Andi herself joins from Georgia. Four support nations raise awareness, funding, and talent: the United States, England, Australia, and New Zealand. Those resources then flow into 16 projects across 13 countries.
How Destiny Rescue Reaches Children in Need
Rescue does not look the same everywhere. In fact, Andi explains that the team uses four distinct approaches. Some agents build trust with individual girls in places where working with law enforcement isn’t possible. Elsewhere, agents act like detectives and collaborate with police. Border and transit monitoring protects children as they travel between countries. Finally, a dedicated task force works to stop online exploitation.
For a deeper look, Andi recommends the documentary You Are Beautiful. It follows one child’s journey from vulnerability to rescue and beyond.
Aftercare That Restores Dreams
Rescue is only the beginning. According to Andi, about $1,500 provides both a child’s rescue and her path to freedom. Most children stay with a case manager for 18 to 24 months. During that season, they receive food, clothing, shelter, and health care. Trauma-informed counseling helps them heal.
Then comes a beautiful question: What did you dream about doing? Some girls want to cut hair or cook. Others hope to become doctors or nurses. Destiny Rescue connects them with schools and local business leaders who can help make those dreams happen. As Melissa observes, this work restores dreams many thought they could never reclaim.
Faith at the Heart of the Anti-Trafficking Mission
Faith drives everything Destiny Rescue does. “So we are driven by our faith in Jesus Christ. We are a ministry,” Andi shares.
The team is guided by Psalm 82:3–4. That passage calls God’s people to “rescue the poor and helpless, and deliver them from the grasp of evil people.” Because of this calling, staff members also earn the right to share the gospel with the children they serve. For Melissa, that is an added bonus on top of an already incredible ministry.
Ways to Help Fight Human Trafficking Beyond Giving
Money matters, yet it isn’t the only way to help. Awareness and advocacy play a huge role, Andi says. Churches can invite Destiny Rescue for a Rescue Sunday or host a documentary screening on a Wednesday night.
Creative supporters have found joyful ways to serve. One group of ladies makes wreaths and donates 100% of the proceeds. Several men in Nashville are putting on a golf tournament. Others have organized line dancing classes, and one youth group even threw an adult-only prom.
Runners and triathletes can download the Freedom Fitness app and ask friends to sponsor them per mile. After all, as Andi puts it, “They’re going to be training anyways. Why not rescue kids at the same time?”
Her simple invitation is to “be an advocate, be an asker or be an ambassador.” Visit the Take Action tab at Destiny Rescue for more ideas.
Warning Signs Parents and Caregivers Should Know
Melissa and her husband work in schools, so they receive training to spot warning signs. Naturally, she asked what everyday people should watch for. Andi encourages anyone who sees something suspicious while traveling to inform local law enforcement. Within families, she suggests noticing changes in grooming or personal hygiene. Growing secrecy, unexplained bruises, and extreme withdrawal are other signals. Because social media is the number one way a child comes across a trafficker today, she urges parents to stay vigilant online.
A Story of Hope from Destiny Rescue
Andi has met rescued girls firsthand, including on a trip to three of the organization’s Africa project nations. Looking back, she reflects that “it’s a totally different thing to look in the eyes of a child that’s been rescued, to pray over them, to hug them, to let them know that they’re loved.”
Newly rescued girls often avoid eye contact. In Andi’s words, “They wear shame like a coat.” Over the following weeks and months, however, she watched them cast it off. Slowly, they began holding themselves upright and “wearing dignity instead.”
One young woman’s story stands out. Rescued at 13 and already expecting her first child, she had prayed for God to send someone to rescue her. The very next day, she met her rescue agent and accepted a path to freedom. Later, she completed counseling, received health care, and attended culinary school. Baking turned out to be her gift.
Staff challenged her to bake a cake at home, probably on a wood-fired stove. She decorated it and brought it to the office, where everyone celebrated together. As the team put it, “that wasn’t just a cake. That was a symbol of her new identity.” Now her little boy will live free as well.
Andi also shares a coworker’s wise words: “We’re not turning them into Olympic swimmers, but we are teaching them to swim.”
The LiteraryScape and Destiny Rescue Partnership
Here’s where readers come in. Ten percent of profit from every LiteraryScape order and book club membership supports Destiny Rescue. It takes about $1,500 to rescue and restore one child. LiteraryScape’s goal is to raise $70,000 together, enough to help rescue 47 kids in 2027. Every novel you buy can become part of that story.
