Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham: A Swoony Scottish Rom-Com Review
We just wrapped up our first rom-com on the LiteraryScape Podcast, and it did not disappoint. Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham swept us into the Scottish Highlands, where clumsy mishaps and slow-burn romance collide. Below, we break down the story, the characters, and our honest reactions to this heartwarming read.
What Is Some Like It Scot About?
Katie Campbell is a travel writer with a habit of stumbling into trouble. She built her career chasing misadventures across the globe. Then a three-week Edwardian experience in Scotland offers something different: a chance to explore her ancestral roots. Soon, she finds herself dodging a mischievous macaw, a jealous coworker, and one seriously grumpy Scotsman.
That Scotsman is Graham McKerrow. He is reclusive, protective, and fiercely devoted to saving his family’s ancestral home. His sister’s death left him determined to keep everyone he loves close. Naturally, a six-foot-one American with a talent for disaster was never part of his plan.
As their worlds collide, Katie discovers folklore, community, and woodworkers in kilts. Meanwhile, Graham starts loosening his grip on everything familiar. Together, they learn that home is not always a place. Sometimes, it is a person.
Katie’s Clumsy Charm (and Why We Related to Her)
One theme runs through this whole book: Katie cannot catch a break. She soaks her shoes in a puddle, snags a fishing hook in her hair, and nearly falls off a cliff. Somehow, Graham rescues her from nearly every scrape.
On the podcast, we shared our own clumsy stories too, from tumbling down stairs to breaking a toe at work. Honestly, Katie’s chaos felt relatable. Her height also plays a big role in the plot, since standing six-foot-one shapes how she sees herself throughout the story.
Graham’s Knight-in-Shining-Armor Moments
Graham rescues Katie more than once. He catches her when she falls down the stairs. He pulls her from the water after a near-drowning. He even rides a white horse to save her from a runaway Highland cow.
That last scene could feel cliché in the wrong hands. However, Pepper Basham writes it with enough humor to keep it fresh and fun instead of predictable.
Faith and Emotional Depth Beneath the Humor
Beyond the laughs, Some Like It Scot explores real struggles. Graham wrestles with guilt over his sister’s death and his need for control. Katie carries insecurities from a strained relationship with her mother.
Their story reminds readers that God’s plans are good, even when they are hard to understand. Ultimately, both characters learn to release control and trust something bigger than themselves.

Since this rom-com marked a first for our podcast, our usual scale did not fit perfectly. Still, we both agreed the story delivered plenty of heart and humor.
