Bestselling author Lynette Eason returns to the LiteraryScape Podcast. This time, we're celebrating her complete Lake City Heroes series. All four books are out now. That means you can binge the whole series today!
Over the past few episodes, we've shared our thoughts on each book. Now we close the series with Lynette herself. Grab your coffee and settle in.
Meet Lynette Eason, Bestselling Christian Romantic Suspense Author
Lynette writes romantic suspense for Revell. She's also a wife, mom, agent, and daughter. In other words, she wears many hats!
With more than seventy books published, she keeps returning to suspense. Why? As a young reader, she loved Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Sweet Valley High. Anything with a mystery grabbed her attention. Above all, she adores the justice readers feel when the good guys win.
Lake City, North Carolina: A Fictional Town That Feels Real
The series unfolds in Lake City, North Carolina. It's fictional, though you might picture it near Asheville. Plenty of danger visits this little town across four books!
Still, Lake City feels like home. Readers will find a favorite diner, a local hospital, and a charming coffee shop. A sweet older couple runs that shop, and their brew sounds irresistible. Lynette doesn't even drink coffee, yet she wanted a cup herself.
Community matters deeply to her. She builds the town piece by piece as each story needs new faces. Additionally, she includes people of different backgrounds and beliefs. After all, our real lives are full of neighbors who see the world differently.
High-Stakes Careers: Detective, Tactical Medic, Fire Marshal, Air Marshal
Each novel features a new hero and heroine. Their careers carry serious risk. Lynette chose roles she could research well, with experts ready to answer her questions.
Readers love these professions, and for good reason. Most of us wouldn't be brave enough to do them. Through her stories, Lynette hopes to honor the real people who serve in these demanding jobs.
Book One: Double Take
The series opens with Laney Jackson, who survived an attempted murder. Now, someone is hunting her again. Meanwhile, James carries wounds from his military service.
Both characters wrestle with PTSD. Family drama adds even more pressure. According to Lynette, she pushes her characters as hard as she can without breaking them. Everyone has some family drama, so readers can relate.
This book stayed on the bestseller list for nine months. Part psychological thriller, it remains a reader favorite. Melissa finished it in just over a day!
Don't Miss the Novella in Cornered
Lynette recommends starting the series with Double Take. Afterward, read the novella featuring James's sister, Stephanie Cross. You'll find it in the Cornered collection. It fits right before book two.
Book Two: Target Acquired
Kinsey King serves as the only woman on an all-male SWAT team. Her medical expertise makes her essential. Unfortunately, someone is picking off her teammates.
Lynette wanted Kinsey's fight for acceptance to feel real. Winning trust in a small-town team wouldn't come easily. Kinsey's grit and determination shine through.
Cole brings a deep, genuine faith to the story. He's openly searching for the woman God has for him. However, he's not perfect. His temper flares, and Kinsey's stubbornness tests him. Even so, he strives to live with integrity.
Book Three: Serial Burn
Fire marshal Jesslyn watches her own church burn in the opening scene. Soon, FBI agent Nathan Carlisle arrives to investigate a possible hate crime.
The case turns deeply personal. Years ago, a fire took Jesslyn's entire family. Only a sleepover at a friend's house saved her life. Now, the same arsonist may be back.
Both Jesslyn and Nathan feel unworthy of love because of their pasts. Together, they learn that grace isn't about being worthy. Instead, they heal side by side.
For research, Lynette leaned on an FBI friend with contacts everywhere. Those experts helped her get the investigation details right.
Book Four: Final Approach
Air marshal Christine is headed on vacation with friends from the first three books. Then, a man tries to hijack their plane. Thankfully, a flight full of law enforcement stops him cold.
Once they land, the team realizes the attempt had a hidden purpose. Things turn personal quickly. Christine's mother died in a hijacking, and her controlling father resents her career choice.
FBI agent Andrew, Nathan's partner, has family chaos too. His parents run a bookstore wherever he's stationed. They often call him to cover shifts, even while he's working a case!
Interestingly, Lynette struggled to find recent U.S. hijackings to research. Ultimately, that made her feel much safer about flying.
Writing Faith Into Suspense Without Preaching
Faith runs through every book in the series. Lynette believes danger forces characters to face hard questions. What do I believe? What happens if I die?
Some of her characters stand strong. Others discover their faith was thinner than they thought. A few question whether God is present in the hard moments.
Lynette never wants her novels to feel preachy. She wants Jesus on every page, just not a 250-page sermon. Real faith, lived by real people, is her goal.
